Refrigerated storage space is expensive. To make the most efficient use of this expensive warehouse floor space, pallets need to be packed as densely as possible. Yet they still need to be safely stacked.

Drive-in racks are ideal for cold storage applications. Just like a solid block of ice melts slower than crushed ice, densely packing material retains the cold better. The pallets are stacked as close together as possible, yet stored logically and safely on a rack. The video below shows a forklift driver loading a drive-in rack.
You can see from the front that there’s no load beams. The pallets are set on rails above and beneath each other. These rails support the skids from the sides, rather than the front and the back, creating room for the forklift to drive right into the rack.

So true. Also, packing densely is better for maintaining the cold. A full fridge is more efficient than an empty one.
